Search Engine Optimization - A Required First Step

This site is centered on our free list for submitting the URL of your site to search engines and directories, but submitting your site is only half the story.

There are tons of resources on the web about search engine optimization or SEO as it is referred to. I'm not going to try include all the information you need to know, even though what you NEED to know is not all that much. It's just that this site is about submitting your site and not about optimization. If you want to learn more about search engine optimization, then one of the places you can visit is our main site at www.NielsenTech.com, just in case you missed all the other links to our site... :-)

But if you submit your site WITHOUT optimizing it first, you will have about 20%-60% of the results that you want, which is people finding your site in search engines for what they are looking for and visiting your site.

So here are the main things that you should know about optimizing your site:

- Scored keyword phrases: You need to find out what people are typing into search engines when they are looking for you. The four ways to do this are 1) Guess, 2) Ask Friends, 3) Look on competitor's sites, 4) Ask the search engines what people are using.

Yes, you're right, #4 is the best option and at this writing you have two choices: 1) The free program from www.GoodKeywords.com, and 2) the paid service at www.wordtracker.com

Once you have a way to research the keywords, you need to make a list and see how many times the keyword phrase was used in the past month. This will help you to see what people are using and use the same things on your site.

Once you have your keyword phrase list, you can start to optimize your site. Here are the main things you should work on to start with:

- Create page titles that are Good English, descriptive of what is on the page, and contain as many keyword phrases as possible. Follow ALL of these rules and you will be on track. DON'T just use keywords, it will get your listing SEEN, but people will NOT CLICK on a dumb-looking listing that is just keywords.

- Create a meta description tag that follows the same rules. It should describe what is on the page that is interesting, it should be well-written, and it should have all the keywords you can fit. If you have to make a choice between making good English and using a keyword, go with the English.

- Use keywords in the other meta tags as you like, but don't put too much text in any tag. Use the keywords tag and separate the phrases with commas and keep it under 1,000 characters. It's not that important but can help a little for some sites.

- Go over your site and edit the copy on every page. When we write text we tend to not use the exact word for what we are talking about each time. Here's what I mean:

When webmasters write text for their web sites, webmasters tend to not use the exact keyword phrase for what webmasters are talking about each time.

When writing the copy for your site, you need to be a little more "wordy" then you would when you write other things. In some cases this may sound a little odd, but if you do not over do it no one will notice. Most people don't read web sites as much as they skim them anyway, but search engines and directorys read everything.

Did you catch that bit of optimization? I didn't need to use the word "directorys", but I want to optimize for people that are looking for those phrases and our free search engine list. Yes, that's more optimization, but it also makes a point that is easy for you to understand. And yes, "directorys" is not spelled correctly, but some people use that to search with. You have to decide if you want to look like you cannot spell or take advantage of the mistakes people make in your optimization.
